Beith Community Gardens celebrate successful Open Garden event

The Beith Community Food Garden volunteers welcomed visitors from across Scotland this month, as their second annual Open Garden event proved a fantastic success. 

The event, held as part of Scotland’s Gardens Scheme, gave visitors the chance to explore the community gardens, meet volunteers, enjoy refreshments and learn more about the work underway across Beith. 

Following the success of last year’s first Open Garden, this year’s event attracted an even greater number of visitors, with people coming along to see first-hand how much the gardens have developed and the positive impact the volunteers are having on the community. 

At Beith Community Centre, visitors were surprised to learn that the colourful wildflower borders and productive teaching allotment were only part of the group’s work. The Sensory Garden, on the opposite side of the centre, proved a particular highlight, offering a peaceful, welcoming space surrounded by lavender, Mediterranean herbs and carefully planned planting. 

Visitors were also able to take part in guided walks through Beith, led by volunteers, which showcased some of the other community gardens and environmental projects that have developed across the town. 

The route included The Wee Potager at the Cross, the Mitchell Street Garden, established by the Orr Park Neighbourhood Watch, and the Coronation Garden on Wilson Street. 

These projects demonstrate the wider impact of community volunteering, with local people working together to improve green spaces, promote biodiversity and create spaces that bring people together. 

The Open Garden also provided an opportunity to raise funds for future community work, with the event raising just over £360 through admissions, refreshments and the popular plant sale. 

However, the event’s success was about much more than fundraising. It was a chance to celebrate the dedication, creativity and commitment of the volunteers who have spent countless hours developing the gardens and supporting wider improvements across Beith. 

Over recent months, the group’s contribution to the community has also been recognised in several ways. Volunteers have received nominations for local recognition, including the TACT Community Achievement Awards and Citizen of the Year nominations, reflecting the difference their work is making. 

Beith Community Association SCIO Chairperson James Robson said: 

“The garden volunteers have shown that improving our communities is not just about big projects; it is about people working together and taking pride in the places they call home. 

“The Open Garden was a great opportunity to showcase what they have achieved, welcome people into these spaces and help raise funds so their work can continue. 

“What makes this project special is that it is about much more than gardening. It has created opportunities for people to volunteer, learn new skills, improve their wellbeing and make a visible difference in their community.” 

The Beith Community Food Garden continues to welcome new volunteers, whether they have gardening experience or simply want to meet people and get involved. 

The group meets every Monday from noon and holds a monthly workday on the first Saturday of each month.
